Growing Alpines in the Garden by Dr Adrian Cooper
St Mildreds Church Hall
Dr. Adrian Cooper, in his talk on growing alpines in the garden, uses examples to cover different conditions and seasons of interest. He takes a “liberal” view with the term alpine and includes woodland plants, orchids, cyclamen, snowdrops and other plants that fit in with the smaller size and conditions. He started gardening at the age of 8 and by the time he was 12 he had his first serious alpine collection. His parents and grandparents clubbed together at Christmas and on his birthday to buy him a 6’ x 8’ aluminium alpine house. He joined the Alpine Garden Society (AGS) in the same year and still has some plants from this time. He has a very broad interest in plants and grows trees, bulbs, woodland plants, orchids, shrubs, cycads and desert plants. He has a deep interest in the environment and is building his garden to be as ecologically healthy as possible. In 2016 he was asked to take over the national Alpine Garden Society shows in the South East and he moved these to a new venue with significant changes. He and his wife, Samantha, maintain a remarkable garden in Sutton Valence, overlooking the Weald of Kent. He is a trustee of the Alpine Garden Society and Great Dixter, Northiam, the former home of Christopher Lloyd.
