20 June
The Crown to the Print Room - A history of Tenterden told with Postcards
Jack Gillett will use postcards to ‘tour’ the town from The Crown to the Print Room. In the 20th Century, numerous picture postcards featuring the old Borough of Tenterden were printed. This talk will narrate a journey from the Crown pub in St Michaels to the Print Room in Tenterden, showcasing postcard images of scenes along the way.
18 July
Metal Detecting at Heronden Hall
Erich Schlaijker will share the metal detecting discoveries he has made at Heronden. What lies beneath Heronden Hall? Mostly bits of lead, bullets, and buried fencing but also coins, buttons, rings, crotal bells, seals, dog spouts, spoons, hop tokens, trade weights, and a silver propelling pencil. Erich Schlaikjer will talk about being a new detectorist and how the finds bear on the history of the house and the town.
15 August
Weights and Measures
Paul Ryley will expand on Weights and Measures. The museum has a number of standard weights and volume measures dating back to 1601. But what determines the sizes of these measurements, and why are they consistent across various cultures, even before contact through trade?
19 September
Iron and Steel. What it did for Tenterden
Roland Hunt relates the importance of Iron and Steel locally. How they have influenced local industry; agriculture, forestry, shipbuilding, building, brewing etc; using relevant artefacts in the museum
