St Mary the Virgin Ebony Church is located roughly halfway between Tenterden and Appledore in Kent on the edge of Romney Marsh. The church originally built by Saxons on an island called Chapel Bank in the River Rother estuary to serve the nearby port of Smallhythe. Over the centuries the river’s course was altered and the island became part of the mainland and the port moved to the coast. After lightning and fire the remains of the church were moved by the Victorians and restored.
