HISTORIC STEAM RAILWAY FROM A VINTAGE CAMERA

Dramatic photographs of one of the South East's favourite steam railways feature in a book to be launched on Saturday 10th October 2020 at Tenterden Town Station.

The full-page monochrome pictures in 'Steel-Oil-Steam' were shot using a giant camera made in 1886 and vividly depict the world and work of the engineers, fitters and volunteers whose efforts behind the scenes at the Kent & East Sussex Railway's locomotive department at Rolvenden, keep the locomotives running.

This beautifully printed book, with 67 facsimile-quality full-page black-and-white reproductions, explores the engineering underpinning the railway. It goes behind the scenes and into the workshops, and shows the people who keep everything working, as volunteers and employees, engineers and fitters, cleaners, steam-raisers, firemen and drivers.

Tom Evans and Terry Hulf took the photos between 2016 and 2020, using a giant 15x12” camera originally used by two Victorian photographers to take pictures of locomotives made at the Beyer Peacock works in Manchester.

Railway Chairman Simon Marsh said: “One of the aims of the Kent and East Sussex Railway is to recreate the living past. It is wonderful to have these pictures of what we do and the people who do it. It's even more wonderful that they are taken on a camera which is older than most of our locomotives, and which was used to take engineering photographs at the height of the railway age. We pride ourselves in keeping old skills and equipment alive, and so do the photographers. A perfect collaboration.”

There will be a chance to see the historic camera and high-quality images at the launch, which will take place in the Refreshment Rooms at Tenterden Town Station on Saturday, 10 October, from midday until 4pm. Tom Evans and Terry Hulf will be happy to sign copies of the books.

Non-travellers must purchase a £1 platform ticket.

Prints of photos from the book will be on sale in the Gift Shop.

The 84-page soft-cover book is priced at £24 and is also available on-line soon at http://evans-hulf.com/

Sue Ferguson, Local Councillor and owner of MyTenterden.co.uk said “It’s a gorgeous book, which would make a perfect Christmas present for anyone interested in steam trains or who appreciates magnificent photography.”

Terry is an independent photographer, painter, video artist and musician who specialises in long-term projects with a strong sense of people and place. Photographs by Tom are in museums and public collections including the V&A and National Portrait Gallery.

Photographers and train enthusiasts won’t want to miss Great Western Railway Prairie Locomotive 4144 which will be making 2 trips on our railway on the day of the launch 10th October 2020. It will leave Tenterden Town at 10:40 am for a round trip of approximately two hours and the second trip will depart Tenterden Town at 13:15.

Normally based at the Didcot Railway Centre, No. 4144 is one of only a handful of Class 5101 locomotives to survive, having been rescued from a Welsh scrapyard where it had been sent in 1965 to be cut up. The 78-ton 2-6-2T tank engines were known as Large Prairies and were built for fast suburban and local passenger services across the Great Western Railway system. No. 4144 was built at Swindon just after the Second World War.

The Kent & East Sussex heritage steam railway runs through 11 miles of beautiful countryside from Tenterden to Bodiam. Covid restrictions have forced the railway to run a limited timetable this year, but trains will be operating at weekends during October plus three days during half term; Tuesday 27th, Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th October and Sunday 1st November. Plans are being prepared for the hugely-popular Santa Specials which will be launched for sale during October.

Advanced booking on the K&ESR website for travel during October is strongly advised.
Bookings can be made via the railway’s website www.kesr.org.uk
