1940s Weekend at the Kent & East Sussex Railway
Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May 2019
Tenterden Town Station
Visitors to the Kent & East Sussex Railway’s 40s Weekend will be able to taste the nostalgia. As well as exciting displays, which make this one of the heritage line’s most popular events, there will be demonstrations of what it was like to cook in the immediate post-war years, when food was rationed.
Meals often featured spam. Today it’s associated with junk emails, but then it meant tinned pork, a strangely coloured meat with an even stranger taste, which was sliced and dished out on tables across the land.
This year’s 40s Weekend is on 18 and 19 May, when the steam railway will provide a perfect backdrop for the 50-plus vehicles on show, including Willys jeeps and service trucks, and more than 200 re-enactors wearing clothes from the period.
A packed programme of events will include singers, dancers and stalls selling vintage clothes and military items.
Women can have their hair styled to a 40s look and a utility fashion show will show the sort of clothes available just after the country had survived the second world war. Popular character Viv the Spiv will be back, faithfully depicting one of the 40s' wide boys who could come up with anything from dodgy nylons to fake watches.
Spitfire displays will take place at the Railway on both days, subject to weather conditions. K&ESR Commercial Manager, André Freeman, said: “Following the well-attended event of last year, we are really excited to welcome back so many of our regulars for another action packed weekend at the railway. It is great to see that our 1940s event continues to capture the imagination of visitors young and young-at-heart and provides so many with a nostalgic step back in time.”
Visitors will be given their own identity cards and can enjoy unlimited travel for the day, with trains running every 45 minutes between Tenterden and Bodiam. There is a packed programme of events at both stations and parking is free at Tenterden and Northiam.
There is free entry to the award-winning Col. Stephens Railway Museum, which tells the
story of Col. H.F. Stephens, the founder of the Kent & East Sussex Railway, who promoted light railways across the country,
The Tenterden Refreshment Rooms will be open for breakfast from 10am, with hot and
cold meals served throughout the day. The gift shop is open throughout the weekend.
