Newspaper Article, Kentish Express 19 May 1914. Death of Sir Charles Drury, Tenterden's Chief Magistrate "Admiral Sir Charles Drury passed to his rest a little before nine this morning". This announcement by the bereaved widow (Lady Drury) to the burgesses of Tenterden, which was posted on the Town Hall soon after ten o'clock yesterday morning, confirmed the sad news which had quickly spread throughout the Borough that their beloved Mayor had passed away. The Admiral's flag was also seen flying half-mast high over his late home, and the Corporation's flag over the Town Hall....

Sir Charles Drury was one of the few Canadians who have attained high rank in the Navy. The second son of Le Baron Drury and Eliza, daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel James Poyntz, he was born at Rothesay, New Brunswick, and received his early education at the Collegiate School, Fredericton. BOARD OF GUARDIANS. At the meeting on Friday there were present: Mr EE Selmes (chairman), Mr J Body (vice-chairman), and Messrs AH Craven, JH Lorden, EB Terry, J Sutton, F Care, H Bodington, GW Bunn, HP Player and JM Mace (clerk). It was decided to put a cement facing to the isolation ward at the House, as suggested by the architect....

Tenterden had a flying visit during the weekend from their police constable who as Stoker Edwards, was one of the saved from HMS Hogue. Edwards, who was in excellent form, after his thrilling experience, is anxious to be on the warpath again, as he remarks, "to get a little of his own back"....

Newspaper Article December 1914. FOR THEIR KING AND COUNTRY. Mr AF Taunt, of Tenterden, on Saturday received official intelligence from the War Office confirming the sad news sent by a comrade in the same regiment some time previously, that his second son, Arthur Frank, had been killed in action in Belgium. Private Taunt having decided to enter the army joined the 14th (King's) Hussars, putting in seven years service, nearly the whole of which was spent in India. Since leaving the Army he was employed as clerk in the Tenterden Brewery till the war broke out, when being on the First Class Reserve he was called up. On August 4th he left Tenterden join his old regiment then stationed at Scarborough, and was the first man to be booked out of Tenterden to take "part in the war". Unfortunately also he was the first soldier living in the parish of Tenterden to lay down his life in the war for his country....

Newspaper Article November 1914. Private Percy John Crouch, Royal West Kent Regiment, who was killed in action on October 21st, was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Frederick Crouch, of Ashford Road, St Michaels, Tenterden. He was 28 years of age and enlisted in the West Kent Regiment when 19 years old. He served nearly seven years in India, only coming home in the early part of the year. He is the first from St Michaels to meet his death.

DEATH OF MRS AM BENNETT. With deep regret we announce the death of Mrs Ada Mary Bennett, the wife of Mr Arthur Bennett, of West Cross, who passed away on Monday morning. Deceased, who was thirty-six years of age, had been suffering from consumption for over twelve months past. She was the elder daughter of the late Mr JF Appleyard of St Michaels and Mrs Appleyard of Beacon Oak Road, Tenterden....
