29 High Street, Tenterden
Hooks (butchers) the 15th century black and white house was originally a hall house and altered in the following century to add a chimney stack at the east end. Formerly smoke from a central fire would have escaped through the roof. Mr Hook carried on the business for nearly 50 years. Behind the shop Mr Stephen Hook had a farmyard and his cattle grazed in fields behind. He had a slaughterhouse at the rear. In the late 1920s he sold to the Davis family, they continued for only 3-4 years.
