Floor and Heating Works
Contractors will be moving into St Mildred's Church on Monday 13th January 2025. The final services will be held on Sunday 5th January, after which the old heating will be switched off for the last time in readiness for the installation, topped with a stone floor, of the new underfloor system. The work will take about seven months and, during this period, the church will not be accessible to the public.
Our 8am and 9.30am Sunday services will continue as usual, and these will be held in St Mildred’s Church Hall. The hall comfortably accommodates 90 people. We hope that we shall be able to live stream these acts of worship, as we do now. Those who prefer to worship in a church have eight others within our benefice to choose from, of course. We have an embarrassment of riches and it will be a good opportunity to explore our group of churches, experience the worship, and meet the people.
Sunday evening services will follow a different arrangement. On the first Sunday of the month, there will be Evensong in Stone Church at 6pm and, on the third Sunday of the month, there will be a Benefice Evensong, also at 6pm. This service will be in a different church each time and be accompanied by a single choir formed from the choristers in our benefice. The last Sunday of the month will be the occasion of a Churches Together service at 6pm. These, too, will be held in a different church each time.
Baptisms and weddings will, of course, be accommodated in the other churches of our benefice. The same will apply to funerals.
We will issue more information through Connect Up! and at our services. In the meantime, please pray for the team of people overseeing this tremendously exciting project! They need our prayers! Lindsay, Jeanette and Andrew
St Mildred's Church in Tenterden dates from the 12th century and is Grade 1 listed. The imposing tower which is 130 feet in height, dominates the town's skyline, and was constructed in 1461. The tower is built of Bethersden Marble, a locally quarried Limestone containing many thousands of brightly coloured shells. The church is open to visitors every day during daylight hours. The Tenterden, Rother and Oxney Benefice was formed in 2016 bringing together the three parishes of the Tenterden benefice (Tenterden, St Michael's and Smallhythe) and the six parishes of the Rother and Oxney Benefice (Appledore, Stone, Wittersham, Ebony, Rolvenden and Newenden). Lindsay Hammond as Team Rector and Jeanette Kennett as Team Vicar both exercise a ministry of oversight across the whole benefice, supporting and enabling the individual churches, and ministry teams, and provide missional accompaniment for accountability and support.
