Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance
Tenterden Rotary Club Speaker 26 November 2015

David Mantz from Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance gave us an update on the work of the service. Since our last Air Ambulance speaker 3 years ago there have been some changes. The main change has been the introduction of night flying, the pilots have to wear night flying goggles so that they can see hazards such as cables and pylons in the dark. The nature of the rescues has also changed, in addition to the car accidents there has been a dramatic increase in night time assaults and stabbings. The crew carry four units of O neg blood and have the skills to intubate, anaesthetise and transfuse blood at the site of an incident. Response times are impressive: they can be in the air within 4 minutes of an emergency call and can fly from Redhill to Marden (for example) in 5 minutes.
