Help us Light Up St Mildred’s
St Mildred's Transformation Project - New Lighting Appeal
St Mildred’s Church has stood at the heart of Tenterden for centuries, but to continue welcoming worshippers, visitors, and performers, the building needs to adapt for the future.
A vital part of the Transformation Project is a new, modern lighting scheme – designed by leading church lighting specialists CES – which will enhance both the beauty and functionality of this historic space. The new scheme will use discreet LED fittings, carefully coloured to blend with the ancient structure, providing brighter, clearer light for services, concerts, and community events. With energy-efficient controls, dimming, and flexible positioning, the new system will make the church easier, more adaptable, and far more cost-effective to run.
Beyond function, the scheme will bring St Mildred’s to life in new ways. Historic features such as the organ, pulpit, east window, and Whitfeld Tomb will be beautifully illuminated, while new pendants (chandeliers) will create a warm, intimate atmosphere for concerts and evening services. Uplighters will highlight arches and columns, adding drama and focus to the building’s unique architecture. This investment will not only improve worship and music-making but will also help St Mildred’s flourish as a cultural and community hub at the centre of Tenterden life.
We need your help to make this vision a reality. Every donation – large or small – brings us closer to lighting our church in a way that honours its history while making it truly fit for the future. Please support the St Mildred’s Lighting Appeal and help us transform our church for generations to come.
