On Sunday 11th November 2018 Tenterden commemorated Remembrance Day. The day started with a Piper playing at 6am on St Mildred's Church Tower to mark the centenary of the signing of the Armistice which brought the 1st World War to an end. The day continued with a parade through the town to the War Memorial, a Service of Remembrance, and a separate ceremony at Tenterden Town Station by the historic Cavell Van, the rail carriage which brought home the body of Nurse Edith Cavell, the heroine shot in 1915 for aiding the escape of British soldiers. This was followed in the evening by the lighting of a beacon on the Recreation Ground, one of a series of similar beacons which were lit at the same time across Britain, and the ringing of the Church bells. The day's events were co-ordinated by Tenterden Town Council with the Royal British Legion, St Mildred's Church, & the Kent & East Sussex Railway for Tenterden Town Station. The six metre tall beacon was funded by the Tenterden Lions Club.

Some special notes from Rev Canon Lindsay Hammond
"The commemoration of the one hundredth anniversary of the end of the First World War was a truly extraordinary occasion here in Tenterden. So many local people worked so hard in preparation for the event, and I would like to pay tribute to their commitment and dedication. From the dawning of the day, accompanied by the sound of the pipes played at the top of St Mildred's Church tower, to its conclusion in the evening around the newly-lit beacon, the marking of this exceptional anniversary drew large numbers of people of all ages. We were blessed by the weather - we were rained on only during the latter part of the Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial. Because of the special nature of this year's Remembrance Sunday there was a heightened sense of poignancy and emotion, and a feeling that this was almost a last chance to say thank you and farewell to those who lost their lives, and those who were injured during the Great War. It was a huge privilege to be involved in this centenary year and the events of Remembrance Sunday 2018 will live long in the memory."
