Tenterden Football Club Archive

According to Sam Stevens' book "Tenterden & St Michaels United, The Story of the first 100 years"

"The records show that football started about 1898 in Tenterden. An early press report refers to the team as "The Reverend Simpson XI". The team was then called Tenterden Juniors, before adopting the title of Tenterden Football Club. However the Club was not officially registered until the early 1900s. In the latter years of the nineteenth century matches were arranged as friendlies and on a regular basis. In fact one has to admire the ambition of the early players, who travelled as far as Tunbridge Wells and Hastings to fulfil their fixtures. When you consider the mode of transportation  available in those days, i.e. there were no cars or motorised vhicles, ... then these men were true pathfinders and totally dedicated to the new sport. Without doubt it must have taken hours to travel to far away venues ..."
