The Tenterden & District Horticultural Society (TDHS) came into being at a meeting held in Tenterden Town Hall on 9 April 1942 when two local societies decided to join forces. They were the Tenterden Gardeners’ Allotment Society and the Tenterden Gardeners’ and Cottagers’ Mutual Improvement Society (founded 1793). In 1942 it was the need for more food during wartime that brought these two societies together. At the first AGM of TDHS on 21 January 1943 there was a membership of 175, total assets of £54 5s 7d and an annual subscription of 1 shilling.

Today, our Society is run by a committee of 14 and offers a wide range of garden related talks, activities and outings as well as the Spring, Summer and Autumn Shows. At present we have around 120 members, both active and non-active gardeners and yearly membership costs just £6, which includes a book of the year’s events. Members and visitors are welcome at our monthly meetings and other events. We warmly welcome new members, whether they are ‘just starting out’ or are more experienced gardeners. Children can become junior members (£3) and have fun entering the Shows.
